Ipswich Students Explore Local Ecosystems at Crane Estate

Donate to the Sustainability Pillar

One hundred Ipswich High School freshmen swapped classroom time for the shores of Crane Estate as part of the science curriculum to learn about the local water and land ecosystems. Students broke into 3 groups and took turns at each station where they:

  • Walked the dunes to identify plants and learn about dune system dynamics

  • Mapped the slope of Crane Beach with UPC pipe, string, and levels

  • Viewed plankton, gathered data about invasive green crabs (held them and measured their carapaces), and identified salt marsh organisms

This experience, funded in part by the Ipswich Education Foundation, gave students a firsthand look at the ecology and wildlife surrounding their hometown.

It is so important for Ipswich students to understand the ecosystems in their own backyard. This project builds a real connection between our students and the Crane Estate.
