The Carolyn Davis Fund Invests in Ipswich Teachers
In Ipswich, the heart of our schools has always been people—educators who believe deeply in learning, curiosity, and care. Few embodied that belief more fully than Carolyn Davis.
From 1991 to 2007, Carolyn served as Principal of Winthrop Elementary School, leading with a blend of kindness, inclusivity, determination, and inspiration. During her tenure, she helped launch full-day kindergarten, helped found the Birth to Three Program, and cultivated a culture where teachers were encouraged to see themselves as lifelong learners.
Carolyn believed that when teachers grow, students flourish.
As Co-Chair of the District’s Professional Development Committee, she worked tirelessly to ensure teachers had access to current research, new strategies, and meaningful opportunities to strengthen their practice. Learning, in her view, was never finished.
When Carolyn retired, the community came together with the Ipswich Education Foundation to create the Carolyn Davis Fund, to recognize her deep commitment that professional growth is essential to educational excellence.
“As a lifelong believer in continuous learning, I was thrilled when the fund was created. Knowing that teachers can pursue professional development to enhance their craft and enrich the student experience is as fine a legacy as I could have hoped for. It speaks volumes about Ipswich’s commitment to educational excellence.”
For more than 20 years, that commitment has quietly but powerfully shaped classrooms across the district.
One recent example is Winthrop teacher Merrill Clerkin, who received a grant from the Carolyn Davis Fund to complete her Wilson Reading System Level I Certificate Practicum. The training focuses on evidence-based strategies to support students with dyslexia and reading difficulties.
“Thanks to the support from the Carolyn Davis Fund, I have been able to refine my skills, gain hands-on experience, and apply strategies that make a real difference in my reading instruction.”
Carolyn’s impact continues to ripple outward. She was recently honored with the Peter Gray Friend of Education Award from the Amesbury Education Foundation, recognizing her lasting influence on children’s education.
But perhaps the most meaningful recognition is this: teachers across Ipswich are still learning, growing, and bringing new ideas back to their students. Carolyn always saw education as a shared responsibility, not just a school-based task. The Carolyn Davis Fund reflects that belief.
Every donation helps ensure that Ipswich teachers continue to have access to the tools, training, and inspiration they need to meet students where they are and help them thrive. DONATE TODAY
